ISCL Folkestone: Day 1 July 13th

There was a chill in the morning air but the sun was shining as we gathered outside South Kent College at 8.30am to begin our Folkestone adventure. The day started with a standard assessment test to make sure the students would be placed at the correct level. The student group is a mix of 10 French and Spanish children between the ages of 11 and 17. The teachers, Ricky and Jez, were very friendly and took the students through some basic English activities in the classroom until lunchtime. After lunch we all set off on a guided tour around Folkestone town centre, but the route was not to be merely a dull ramble through the highlights of a British seaside town!

Por la mañana hacía un poco de frío, aunque el día estaba soleado. Mientras que nos adjuntamos en frente de la “universidad” del Sur de Kent a las 8.30 horas para empezar nuestra aventura en Folkestone. El dia comenzó con una prueba de nivel para dividir a los alumnos en dos grupos dependiendo de su nivel de inglés. Los estudiantes son 10 chicos, 7 franceses y 3 españoles, cuyas edades se encuentran entre los 11 y 17 años. Los profesores, Rickky y Jez, eran muy amigables y les dieron unas actividades básicos en inglés hasta la hora de comer. Después de la comida visitamos el centro de Folkestone, ¡pero la ruta no solamente iba a ser el típico paseo de los sitios turísticos de un pueblito británico de la costa!

Before leaving, the students were divided into three groups and given their task pack for the day. This consisted of a route map with lots of questions about specific landmarks which they would encounter along the way. We were blessed with glorious sunshine as the students, now armed with their new challenge and a competitive spirit, followed the staff through the streets of Folkestone. Along the way they found the statue of William Harvey, a Folkestone born scientist who first discovered the blood circulatory system, and a replica of the ancient beacons which used to be lit up along the south British coast to warn the townsfolk of impending invasions from abroad. From the high point of the route we could clearly see the coast of France across the sea.

Antes de salir se dividía los estudiantes en tres grupos y se les dió su tarea del día. Ésta consistia en un mapa con la ruta marcada y varias preguntas sobre puntos específicos que encontrarían por el camino. Estuvimos bendecidos por un sol caluroso mientras que los estudiantes, ya cargados con un reto nuevo y un espíritu competitivo, seguían a los empleados a través de las calles de Folkestone. Ahí se encontraron primero con la estatua de William Harvey, un científico de Folkestone que descubrió el sistema circulatorio de la sangre, y una copia de una almenara antigua, que se solía encender por toda la costa para avisar a la población de las invasiones extranjeras. Desde este punto alto de la ruta podíamos ver claramente la costa francesa al otro lado del mar.

Next we followed the path down towards Sandgate, an area of beautifully landscaped walkways winding along the coast.

Después bajamos una cuesta hacia Sandgate, una zona de paseos diseñados estupendamente, que se encuentran pegados a la costa.

From halfway down we could see an open theatre area with four costumed performers patiently sitting amongst the columns and a few spectators sitting in the shade looking at them... but what were they waiting for?

Poco después de empezar la bajada pudimos ver un área de teatro abierto, donde había cuatro actores disfrazados sentados tranquilamente entre las columnas, y también unos pocos espectadores sentados en la sombra… ¿pero de qué esperaban?

When we arrived and sat down the performance finally began, it was obvious they had been waiting for us to arrive! The Lights Up street theatre group treated us to act one, The Beauty Pageant, a sketch introducing three contestants. The students had to pay close attention as some of the questions in their task pack were related to the performance. The winner of the Beauty Pageant was chosen by round of applause from the audience.

Cuando llegamos y nos sentamos. Entonces fue cuando, al fin, la actuación comenzó, ¡fue obvio que nos esperaban a nosotros! El grupo callajero de teatro Lights Up nos recibió con el primer acto, El Concurso de Belleza, una obra con tres participantes. Los alumnos tuvieron que prestar mucha atención, ya que había algunas preguntas en su tarea relacionadas con la actuación. La ganadora del concurso fue seleccionada por una ronda de aplauso de la audiencia.

We took advantage of the photo opportunity with the actors before moving on to look for more clues along the walkway.

Aprovechamos la oportunidad de sacar unas fotos con los actores antes de seguir buscando pistas por el paseo.

We also found a children’s play area with a pirate ship, which the students climbed and explored, and received their obligatory suncream treatment!

En el camino también encontramos un recreo de niños con la forma de un barco pirata, que los alumnos escalaban y exploraban, y recibian el obligatorio crema de sol!!

Then we continued past another open theatre area until we found Lights Up waiting for us at the edge of Sandgate near the beach. Here they gave us act two, a performance based on a witness’s account of the tragedy of the Titanic.

Luego continuamos el camino, pasando por otro teatro abierto, hasta que nos encontramos con Lights Up esperándonos al final del paseo de Sandgate. cerca a la playa. Ahí nos ofrecieron el segundo acto, una actuación basado en el testimonio de una víctima de la tragedia del Titanic.

We continued on to the water-powered cable car overlooking the sea, where the students had to answer more questions in the pack before climbing up the steps to the town centre. There we wandered along a tree-lined path and through the cemetery of an old church. Once in the centre we headed towards The Old High Street, currently being renovated and renamed as the Creative Quarter, an area full of narrow cobbled streets lined with outlets for local artistic endeavours. These range from flower shops and galleries to cake decorators and interior designers.

Here we were greeted again by Lights Up for act three, a child’s account of their adventures searching for shrapnel amongst the bomb-sites of World War II.

Seguiamos hasta un sistema de transporte operado por un sistema de agua y con vistas del mar. Aqui los estudiantes tuvieron que contestar más preguntas antes de subir de nuevo al centro de la ciudad. Ahí caminamos por la sombra de los árboles al lado del camino que daba al cementario de una iglesia antigua. Pasando ésta llegamos al centro y fuimos a “The Old High Street”, que actualmente esta renovandose y que se ha renombrado como El Cuarto Creativo. Este área está llena de callecitas de piedras bordeadas por un conjunto de tiendas (desde floresterias y pastelerias hasta galerias y diseñadores de décoración).

Aqui fuimos recibidos de nuevo por Lights Up y el tercer acto, que contaba las aventuras de un niño que exploraba los sitios bombeados durante la Segunda Guerra mundial.

When act three had finished, we doubled back up the road to look at some interesting sculptures adorning the shops and houses, including pig’s heads and big metal stingrays. On turning the corner we found a tiny park where the students had to find two hidden sculptures by the famous British modern artist, Tracey Emin.

Al terminar el acto tres volvimos por la misma calle y miramos unas esculturas interesantes que adornan las tiendas y casas, incluyendo cabezas de cerdos y peces rayas hecho de metal. Cuando doblamos la esquina encontamos un parquecito donde los estudiantes tuvieron que buscar dos esculturas por la famosa artista britanica de arte moderna, Tracey Emin.

With this task completed we followed our guides along a different route back to the cemetery and act four from Lights Up, a spooky tale of ghosts and strange happenings. At the end one of the students was sent to look for something behind a tree, where one of the performers was waiting to chase him back to the group!

Con esta tarea hecha seguimos nuestros guias por otra ruta y lleguemos otra vez al cementario a ver el acto cuatro de Lights Up, que era una cuenta de fantasmas y ocurrencias raras. Al final le envoi a uno de los estudiantes a buscar algo detrás de un árbol, donde le esperaba uno de los actors que le perseguía hácia el grupo otra vez.

After all this excitement the students had a little free time in the shopping centre before walking back up to the college where the tasks were examined and the winners received their prizes. Once the prize-giving ceremony was over the host families came to pick up the students and take them home for dinner and a well-deserved rest!

Despues de toda esa emocion les dejaba a los estudiantes un poquito de tiempo libre en las tiendas antes de volver a la escuela otra vez. Una vez ahí se corrigia las tareas y se presentó a los ganadores sus premios. Luego llegaban las familias para llevar los estudiantes a casa para cenar y tener el descanso que ya habian ganado todos!!
